MYTH#1: Invest in beachfront property in Arizona or Nevada
- Despite what you might see in movies- California will not fall into the ocean. Earthquakes in California actually help keep the land above sea level. The 1992 Cape Mendocino earthquake uplifted a 15-mile stretch of coast about 4 feet!
MYTH #2: Small Earthquakes Prevent Big Ones from Happening- Small earthquakes release very little energy compared to large ones. To equal the release of energy of an M9 earthquake, we would need 2000 M5 earthquakes every year for 500 years.
- That would be more than 5 moderate earthquakes everyday!
MYTH #3: The Ground will crack open and swallow you up- The opening of great, yawning chasms that may swallow houses and people only occurs in fiction. Though some fissures may be produced on earthquake triggered landslides, the earth's pressure is too great to allow ground crack associated with faulting to open up.
MYTH #4: The "Triangle of Life" is the Best Way to Protect Yourself- NOT TRUE-the best survival method is to drop, cover and hold on. The triangle of life method advocates that you get next to a large object rather than crouch beneath.
- This will expose you to lacerations and crushing injuries from falling objects and debris.
- Most organizations recommend you drop, cover and hold on for best protection.
