Jesse Nickell III has been with the company for over 20 years building primarily in the Santa Cruz Market. Jesse earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management from California State University, Chico (1986). In addition to his degree, he is a licensed General Contractor and has been certified as an ICBO Building Inspector.
A native Californian, Jesse grew up in Los Gatos. His parents, local business owners, helped instill in him a strong work ethic and a foundation as a resourceful businessman. His career began with his own General Contracting company, specializing in commercial building. After obtaining his degree, Mr. Nickell accepted a position with Barry Swenson Builder as a Project Engineer and advanced through multiple management slots to his current position as Vice President of Construction in the Monterey Bay area.
Jesse has been the Vice President of the Barry Swenson Builder’s Monterey Bay operations since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Active in the recovery of the Santa Cruz downtown area, his work includes the building and/or renovation of the following projects:

Other recent projects include the newly completed Live Oak Library and Los Gatos Creekside Village (70 single family); additional projects under Jesse’s direction include the Live Oak Business Bark, South Pacific Apartments, Harley Davidson of Santa Cruz, Scott’s Valley Walgreen’s, Aptos Warmth Company, Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital, Raytek , and Century Theatres in Salinas and in Monterey. Jesse also was a key innovator in the renovation of the Del Mar Theatre in Santa Cruz, the Jefsen Hotel in downtown Watsonville and multiple renovations of the dormitories at California State University, Monterey Bay.
Jesse has a justly earned reputation for innovative construction ideas including extracting the most from every construction dollar spent and for creative recycling. Notable examples include the preservation of the Santa Cruz County Bank Building façade and the use of feature architectural elements of the old St. George Hotel on the new building.
Jesse is a believer in the new urban approach to development, focusing on the preservation of green belts, agricultural land and coastal property. He is an active participant in the redevelopment of existing sites utilizing high quality mixed-use buildings to satisfy community economic needs.
