BSB Hosts Construction Delegation from Holland

BSB had the opportunity to host a group of students, teachers, and industry leaders from Holland this week. The students are studying US building code, and earthquake systems for their research project. BSB Staff member Josh Burroughs took them on a tour of the Vendome High-Rise Apartment Community in San Jose for a real world example of California Concrete Structural Systems aimed at protecting against future earthquakes.

How Christmas in the Park was Saved

In coordination with PG&E, SunPower, Virgin America, Garden City Construction, and the San Francisco 49ers Foundation, Barry Swenson Builder teamed up with a matching grant donation to keep Christmas in the park alive for the 2011 holiday season. Soccer Silicon Valley

BSB had the opportunity to sponsor the Soccer Silicon Valley 4th Annual Dinner on October 19th, 2011; it was a great evening filled with local soccer fans, Earthquakes players, city and county officials, and neighborhood leaders. There is now a permanent exhibit at San Jose City Hall that showcases the history of Soccer in Silicon Valley. BSB Staff leads Shelterbox fundraising efforts to $100k goal!

BSB would like to thank Keith Henderson for his continual support of the Shelterbox program and his mentorship to the Rotary Interact Club in Santa Cruz. ShelterBox was chosen as Interact 5170’s international project for the 2010-2011 school year. Interact, Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18, is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. Interactors from the district supported the organization through fundraising and volunteering to support the cause, which raised more than $100,000.

Urban Land Institute Fireside Chat with Barry Swenson


BSB hosted the Urban Land Institute's Young Leader's Group for their signature Fireside chat event. The fireside program connects the young leaders group with prominent real estate professionals in the Bay Area. Hosted at the Loft Bar & Bistro in downtown San Jose, Barry spoke to the emerging executives about his career in real estate; best practices, lessons learned over the years, and an awesome question and answer session.

BSB 2011 In-Kind Service Projects



Via Services is a private, independent non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and special needs achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives.
BSB thanks John Strole and Doug Edwards from our Small Construction Division, along with Kay Walker from Via Services for coordinating our projects out at their Cupertino hills campus. Our donated services included: installing a new deck, re-painting the ceiling at the music building, painting one of the residence halls and installing new doors and gutters; new gutters on the medical building; new gutters on music building.

BSB Sponsors the San Jose Downtown Doors Project!

Downtown Doors features the art of high school students on otherwise stark utility doors in the center city's core area. This is the San Jose Downtown Foundation's signature event, involving high school art students from throughout Santa Clara County, as well as downtown business and property owners who are willing to display the art. The biggest benefit is for pedestrians and motorists in downtown who are enriched by the provacative, compelling and inspiring works.
This year BSB sponsored the downtown door "Autumn Walk" created by Jung Wu of Leigh High School and located at the Hilton San Jose. Great work Jung!

InnVision's Georgia Travis Center Opens Child Care Center

InnVision CEO, Christine Burroughs and YWCA Silicon Valley CEO, Keri Procunier McLain, complete the ribbon cutting for the new Georgia Travis Center Child Care Center. This care facility is a state-certified retrofit of the existing Georgia Travis Center, as an on-site auxiliary service. InnVision owns GTC, and YWCA Silicon Valley will be the operator of the program. Construction was completed by Barry Swenson Builder and all overhead and profit was donated to InnVision on this project. BSB would like to thank InnVision and YWCA for all they do in our community. The project will truly allow women to pursue job opportunities in our valley while having their children in a safe and certified child care program, for free.

BSB 2011 In-Kind Service Projects

Sacred Heart Nativity School provides education for low-income boys and girls in San Jose, in preparation for entrance into college preparatory schools. This year, BSB donated services and added two new drinking fountains and replaced carpet and blinds throughout the building.

InnVision's Montgomery Street Inn Project included new flooring throughout the building, including the offices and dormatories, as well as maintenance to the HVAC System and lighting in the main hall. NEWS: Homeless Garden Project Turns 20!

The Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz will celebrate 20 years of tilling the soil, planting the seeds and lending a hand to those in need.
"Barry Swenson Builder leases the Natural Bridges Farm to the Homeless Garden Project for $1 a year, which is very generous," said Matt Guerrieri, project volunteer. "That allows us to train homeless people who need a hand up and are trying to get out of homelessness or get back into the community."

Wheelchair Distributions in Shanghai / Dhaka

Sacred Heart Community Service
"Day of Service & Rememberence"

For the past few months, Barry Swenson Builder has teamed up with Sacred Heart Community Service for their Day of Service & Remembrance. BSB Staff coordinated the donations of all the materials needed to renovate trailers at a blighted trailer park in San Jose. This rehabilitation project will bring a new light to the neighborhood, and BSB is happy to have community partners like Sacred Heart, whose commitment to the community makes San Jose a better place! The day of service will be on Sept. 11, 2010
